White Rock

Sunday Afternoon In White Rock

Yesterday we went to explore White Rock which is a Canadian coastal town about 5 minutes away from the USA Border. The town got it's name from a large boulder on the shoreline which seagulls would flock to and hence poo on which made it very white (original hey). Apparently it was covered in that much poo sailors would use it as a beacon! Nowadays the boulder is painted white and is still a focal point for visitors and although it's about as entertaining as staring at a boulder can be - if you visit White Rock you obviously have got to walk up and touch it.

We ventured out using our Translink passes, making the most of them as at the weekend we can use them to travel anywhere (usually we can only go 2 zones). We caught a couple of buses, the last one going the majority of the way on Highway 99 and it took us about 1.5 hours to get there. Once we got there we caught another short bus ride to the seaside and then went for lunch on the deck of a restaurant called The Boathouse which had a fantastic view. After that we had a walk along the beach as the tide was out. We then walked along the pier where there were lots of people trying to catch crabs but not just for fun, they were catching them to eat! The weather was really nice, I wished I'd took a towel and some shorts as I would have been the sea for sure but we didn't expect it to be so nice. We stayed around the town for about 4 hours and then we made our way home. This time on our way back we caught a bus to Surrey Station and then took the SkyTrain for the rest of the journey (I preferred the first route, it was a lot more scenic and definitely had less smelly people!).
