No Rest For The Wicked?
The last few days have been busy both socially and professionally. I seem to have gone from having plenty of time to very little in such a short space of time I don't feel like I've had time to catch my breath (now I know why that saying exists)! Lou was working evenings all last week so instead of staying in the apartment on my own each and every night I decided to make the most of the other options available to me. At risk of making myself sound like some kind of beer monster I'll describe the last few days! On Thursday I went with friends to a pub off broadway and commercial drive straight from work so I could watch the Canucks vs Detroit game (as it was PPV). Afterwards after deciding to be sensible and leave early after the whistle I somehow ended up in another pub instead of jumping on the SkyTrain home! We unexpectedly got caught up listening to a 19 person Jazz band playing the austin powers and pink panther theme tunes amongst others, it was quite random but cool. Luckily one of the other guys had the sense to ask for the bill before I ordered another, it could have ended up being a long night had we not called it quits when we did.
On Friday after finishing work I had some more drinks this time in the office itself. One of the cool things about the new workplace is that they have their own beer on tap and you're encouraged to pour yourself a free pint or 4 after finishing work. I kept it sensible though so I wouldn't make a fool of myself in front of new workmates. After that my buddy CJ introduced me to one of the 'famous' bars of Vancouver, The Cambie. The place is a restaurant, pub and hostel all in one and it's a bit different to most pubs here as it's a rundown, however it's still pretty friendly and cheap. I liked the place as it was a bit like a place I used to go to in Leicestershire but I can see why it's not for everyone! After that we grabbed something to eat and then headed back to Burnaby, I stayed out so late that Lou picked me up on her way home from work. On Saturday I caught up with as many phone calls as I could and then went to Lougheed Mall so Lou could get some clothes for the evening. We had wanted to go somewhere outdoors during the daytime but it was heavily raining (as it has been for the last 8 days) and we still haven't got all of our outdoor attire yet. At night we went out for a new friends birthday celebration downtown which was cool and we visited a club called The Red Room for the first time. It was the first time Lou had a whole weekend off for a while and she loved it, after 3 nights in a row I found it hard to keep pace myself! We had been put on the guest list so didn't have to queue for long and I got in for a discounted prive, Lou got in for free. We left before 1am to catch the last train home which was full of other party people and we were fast asleep within minutes of being home or at least I was.Sunday was quite relaxed compared to the 3 days previous but it was another huge wash-out weather-wise (not complaining, just describing). The rain has been coming down even more so than usual and we've had a few wind warnings on the TV too. We decided to just nip out quickly to get some groceries and then catch up on our clothes washing which had piled up over the working week just like it did in the UK! In the evening we just stayed in an watched a film. We've got a Blu-Ray player now so we wanted to watch a film in HD, Transformers 2 was a good choice!
Today was a typical Monday back at work, it did feel nice to feel a bit more comfortable in my surroundings compared to last week. Lou is on the same shift pattern as me too for the next few days so the good thing is we get to see each other a lot from 4pm onwards. One thing's for sure this week will be a bit quieter in terms of drinking, I feel like an old man compared to how I was in my uni days and it was only 5 years ago!
