Rocky Point Park

During the week we drove over to Rocky Point Park in Port Moody. Lou had noticed it in one of the books we have and it looked very scenic so we decided to check it out and have a walk around the waters edge. However when we arrived it was low tide at this section of the inlet so it wasn't as scenic as what we'd expected, it was also a bit smelly too. So, we didn't quite get the fresh air or picturesque place we expected but at least it was better than staying inside the apartment on a warm afternoon. We noticed bear warning signs whilst we were walking about which made us a bit apprehensive but thankfully we didn't come across any whilst we were there!

Canada Day 2010

Today was Canada Day, a celebration marking the 143rd birthday of Canada. Similarly to last year we took the SkyTrain into Downtown Vancouver to join in the celebrations. In 2009 we had fun but we'd only just arrived and we were still feeling like tourists. This year it felt more like home and there seemed to be the same sense of the goodwill that was experienced in the city during the winter olympics. The weather wasn't as warm but there was the same nice vibe around the city.

Visiting Bowen Island

Thursday was a great day weather wise so we decided to get on a ferry from Horseshoe Bay and go over to Bowen Island for the afternoon. We'd never been to Bowen Island before and opted to go over as foot passengers ($18 return for us both). As it turned out there wasn't much of the island we could see on foot apart from the small village around Snug Cove (where the ferry docks) but it was just about right for the amount of time we had to spare. Bowen Island is situated 2km away from the mainland and is approximately 6km wide and 12km long with a population of about 3,500. From what I've been told it is now mainly a day-trip destination for Vancouverites and a holiday home retreat location for many people from the mainland.

The ferry crossing was only about 20 minutes long and we stood on the sun deck to take in the great views and enjoy the sea breeze. As it was midweek it was not very busy and we joked that it was like being 2 seniors on a day trip, a joke which was even funny when we arrived and noticed there were several actual seniors doing just that! Once we arrived we checked out the village, had a quick bite to eat then went on an uphill hike to Dorman Point. It was at this point I regretted not putting on some shorts and by the time we got to the top 40 minutes later we were both tired out and very hot! The views from the top were great, and we stayed for a while just relaxing. We're very much used to the city now and our apartment is next to a busy road and train line. Being at the top of that mountain made us remember and realize just how accustomed we'd become to the noise (we don't notice it much now except for the car horns and emergency service vehicle sirens). All you could hear there was a few birds, the distant sound of water and the noise of a slight breeze on the leaves of the tree's. I definitely noticed how loud our place was when returned home a few hours later!
